EWCSD Celebrates Passage of $97 Million Bond to Improve Schools

East Whittier City School District is excited to announce the successful passage of Measure C, a $97 million bond that will address critical infrastructure needs, improve classroom environments, and prioritize student and staff safety across the District. The funds from Measure C will continue the work of Measures R and Z, which allowed the District to fully modernize two campuses and provide infrastructure improvements at all fourteen EWCSD school sites. With nearly 65% of voters supporting the measure, the bond's passage reflects strong community trust in EWCSD and a commitment to improving local schools.

“I am filled with gratitude for the commitment our community has shown towards our students' education by supporting Measure C,” EWCSD Board of Education President Wendy Carrera said. “These funds represent not just numbers, but a promise to invest in our students' futures and enhance the quality of education across the District. We will ensure that every dollar is put to great use, fostering an environment where our students can thrive, succeed and continue to be safe.”

The $97 million bond will fund several key projects, including:

  • Removing Hazardous Materials: Ensuring safer facilities by eliminating asbestos and replacing key infrastructure, including roofs, heating, ventilation, and plumbing systems.

  • Upgrading Classroom Technology and STEM Labs: Providing classrooms with cutting-edge tools and creating state-of-the-art STEM labs to prepare students for 21st-century careers.

  • Replacing Portable Classrooms with Permanent Structures: Enhancing the quality of learning environments by transitioning from aging portable classrooms to new permanent buildings.

  • Improving Safety and Security Systems: Strengthening campus safety and emergency preparedness with upgraded security systems, including the installation of surveillance cameras.

These improvements align with the District’s mission of developing 21st century learners by providing an environment where students feel safe, supported, and inspired to learn.

The next steps will involve forming an oversight committee to assist with the planning and design phases to ensure the efficient and equitable use of bond funds. EWCSD is committed to transparency throughout the process, and will continue to provide regular updates at Board Meetings and the District website as the District prepares to begin the planning process.
