"Lettres de femmes, Femmes de lettres"
"Lettres de femmes, Femmes de lettres" ("Letters by Women, Women of Letters") is a visually engaging production adapting writings by French and Francophone women authors from across six centuries, from Marie de France to Fatou Diome, including Madame de la Lafayette, Colette, and Maguerite Duras. All of these women and their selected texts share an “imagery pertinent to the natural elements of water, wind and fire as well as themes of letters, paper, voyage, exile, and [...] the need to write oneself out of exile and silence.” Over a background of images and quotes, “Lettres de femmes, Femmes de lettres” reveals the humanity of women’s voices over the centuries. Through a visual trip through space and time, visiting the far away reaches of the French-speaking world, as well as its distant centuries, leading up to today’s complex reality, the audience will relate to the emotions and dilemmas of famous female writers expressing their views as mothers, lovers, sisters, and daughters. Such authors include Marie de France, a poet who settled in England in the shadow of William the Conqueror; Madame de Lafayette, who wrote the very first modern novel; Colette, a provocative writer who broke taboos in early 20 century France; and Marguerite Duras, whose sensual experience of life in Vietnam marked generations of French teen readers.
